A Tribute to Jason - Contributed by: LeAnna Brinckman, RN, Skilled Nursing

A fellow co-worker from the Skilled Nursing Unit passed away Sunday, October 27th. While at home in Turpin. Jason J.A. Smith left us doing it "his way" with family by his side. Co-workers who knew and worked along side Jason are saddened by his leaving us and find it hard to express their pain. Jason, God is doing his work through you because many of us still feel your presence in the halls of SWMC.

We know that Jason accomplished a lot in the 5 years he was with SWMC. He was a gifted and talented man whose contribution was seen by patients and fellow caregivers. Blessed with a keen insight, Jason was very perceptive. Often through humor and wit, he could diffuse anger and confrontation when working with patients as well as coworkers. He would say to staff, "Remember, DNR - do not run for anything." Jason was one of the "glue people" that held us together, who transcended our differences and made us feel like a part of the unit. For entertainment, Jason could juggle many items, no matter what the object.

The real center of Jason's spirit was love. A great deal of this emotion rested within his family. They were so supportive of his efforts to become a Register Nurse. Many were surprised by the degree of encouragement a family can offer. In turn, his wife and kids brought him a true sense of joy and fulfillment. All of Jason's life experiences from family to work and everything in between helped him develop a strong sense of compassion and justice.

We will miss your person so much Jason, but we are comforted in knowing that your spirit lives on. We know this is not the end, but only a beginning. We can hear you say, "Laugh as we laughed at the little jokes. Play, work, smile and think of me. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you, somewhere very near, just around the corner. All is well."
