Southwest Medical Center is proud to introduce

Digital Mammography

As many of you know, digital mammography is quickly becoming the standard in breast imaging.  Mammography is the best tool in early diagnosis giving patients a much better chance of survival and leading a long, productive life.  It is with this in mind that Southwest Medical Center is proud to introduce digital mammography to our Radiology Department.

After evaluating the various companies for introducing digital mammography, we selected the Selena system from Hologic based on its image quality, patient safety and a number of unique features that distinguish the Selenia from other digital systems.

Installation and training on the new unit will take place in June 2008.

You may be asking yourself, as a patient what does this mean to me??  Well let us tell you:

1.  With digital mammography you will get a sharper, clear image that the radiologist can manipulate as he reviews the images.  For women with dense breasts this is extremely important as the radiologist can make the images darker and lighter depending on the area he is concerned about.

2.  With digital mammography the radiologist will not have to callback as many patients for additional imaging.  This does not mean you will not be called back, as different views may be necessary.  However, with digital mammography the radiologist has the ability to magnify any part of the image to get a better look, without retaking the image.

3.  With digital mammography you will have less time to wait.  As soon as your image is taken, the technologist will view it on her screen for technical factors.  Once all images are completed you are free to go.  No more waiting for the tech to develop the images in the manual processor.

Beginning June 16, 2008 patients will have a digital mammogram exam.
